detox smoothies: are we really doing this again?

So, smoothies are back, huh? I can’t be the only one who’s slightly amused by the whole ‘detox’ hype. Anyway, the title sounded too intriguing to ignore — I mean, ’10 Delicious Detox Smoothie Recipes for a Healthier You’? It’s one of those trends that scream, ‘Pour everything green and hope for magic.’

I tried it once. Ended up with something that looked like swamp water, but hey, maybe I didn’t have the ‘detox touch’. There was kale, a bit too much of it (mistake number one), some suspiciously old celery, and the inevitable splash of oat milk. The result? A smoothie possessing the consistency of sludge and an aftertaste that made me question my life choices.

There’s this blog section on workouts that made me chuckle — like, paint-by-numbers instructions on mastering life. Sometimes it feels like everyone’s one smoothie away from enlightenment, right?

Naturally, I ventured further into the chaos. These detox things apparently include everything from ginger (the stubborn knobbly root I never used) to flaxseed, which I’m convinced is just dust marketed to us by some seed-obsessed hipster. And when did turmeric sneak into sweet drinks? I thought it was content wreaking havoc on curries in overpriced restaurants.

People really do take this seriously. Instagram is plastered with pristine smoothie bowls — colorful, overfilled, and strategically zoomed-in. I’m guessing there’s a secret lab dedicated to spilling exactly three chia seeds artistically onto every creation. But then again, who am I to critique while shoveling spoonfuls of cereal straight from the box? Oops.

In any case, detox smoothies: the ambiguous saviors of modern wellness ideals. Whether it ends with a healthier you or just another disaster in the kitchen is really the gamble. Maybe today, I’ll just stick to my coffee. My eyes still hurt. Ugh.
