keto at fast food spots: can it be done?

Why is it that every time I’m about to grab a quick bite at some fast food joint, I remember I’m supposed to be on this keto diet? It’s like the universe playing a cruel joke on me. Imagine sitting there, surrounded by the heavenly smell of fries and spicy chicken sandwiches, and you squint at the menu, trying to think how on earth a burger wrapped in lettuce would even taste.

So, I’ve been diving into this insane world of keto fast food options. And let me tell you, it’s a mixed bag. Take McDonald’s, for example—home of the Big Mac. But now I’m eyeing the bunless burger, more lettuce than I ever thought I’d eat in a lifetime, cheese oozing out in a way that screams, ‘I tried! But it’s not the same, buddy.’

And why do they always ask if you want to *add* something carb-loaded, like the bun or worse, fries, as if the very idea of a side salad wasn’t already depressing enough? There’s this odd camaraderie you experience when you order these stripped-down meals. Like sharing a knowing nod with the guy at the counter who clasps his hands in pity rather than judgment.

So, when I’m at Wendy’s, it’s all about that bacon-fest that doesn’t feel low-carb at all. Unofficial keto hall of famer? Maybe. But hey, anything wrapped in bacon should get some applause.

Anyway, one of my favorite tricks is grabbing a grilled chicken piece, then putting it on top of a mound of those bright neon salads. They never seem quite real, almost like a prop. And it all pairs with, naturally, a diet soda that barely hides the longing gaze shot towards the milkshakes.

But here’s the kicker: the stares you get from people sitting one table over, wolfing down their carb-filled feast like they’re in some food commercial. I can almost feel their judgment. Or maybe they’re just curious as to why someone would willingly sacrifice the gooey perfection of cheese fries.

Anyway, my eternal quest for maintaining my diet amidst these processed temptations was summed up when I spotted an overhead ad at one joint boasting about their new keto-friendly menu items. Well, turns out it was basically the same food, just minus the soul.

Maybe it’s time to cook at home more often… Ugh.
